Red and Black

Today was real interesting.

Bombed a calc midterm. I probably didn't need to do that.

Failed spectacularly to rescue Julie's car. I did hang out there the whole day, which leads to the rant in this post.

Went to the UC pep rally. Louisville is so fucked...
I got some school spirit and I likes me some fooball. I have a lot more friends at NKU and only one of my good friends is at UC but I still love the place. :)
Also came back with three free albums. You haven't heard of any of them.

Rant:
So I might be the nicest asshole ever. I'm a dick to everyone about small stuff but I'm also the kind of guy who will drive to the ends of the earth to help somebody out of a tight spot. I didn't think this was at all weird, but Julie was convinced I had done something special by hanging out and listening to her complain all day. That's just what I do. People bitch at me all the time because I listen to them and don't resent that they bitch at me. I just want them to be happy. [shrug] I dunno. Maybe I attract the people with issues because I don't mind people who have issues.

Not really a rant as such, but whatever. I'm gonna listen to those CDs and get some damn sleep.

Robots and Radio Stations

In the third part of my series on [subject] and [subject], I'd like to announce two discoveries.

One, BearCast, is UC's student radio. It plays some pretty sweet shit but I just today got it to work on my computer. Right now it's playing "Dog Problems" by The Format.It's pretty random, though. In the last half hour I've heard Justin Timberlake, System of a Down, The Format, Coldplay... It isn't all good but I'm happy it works. And I never have to hear commercials since it's run out of CCM. Win.

The other discovery is something I had already guessed, but I've been reading some Asimov lately and got my hands on The Robot Collection. It's excellent. Probably a bit technical for you guys, but it's science fiction for scientists so I'm a big fan. It's the second author in my "Classic SF author each quarter!" plan. Last quarter was Heinlein.

In other news, it seems Brandon has started a trend. While I do indeed have a list of things to do before I die, many of them are interesting, many terrifying, and some sickening. So I'm gonna give you the highlights.

-Leave the country.
-Learn Mexican Spanish and Quebecois French.
-Kill and eat a man.

That last one is completely serious, mind you. I joke about it all the time but if given the chance to do it without consequence I'd eat baby in a heartbeat.

Vanity is for Bitches

And we're all bitches.

So I looked down in the shower today and realized I'd defied Emily Wernet. She told me not to grow a six pack.

Also, Kayla, a friend (or something like it) of Meagan's, told me I should gage my ear. I'm not gonna do that - not now, not ever - but I have to admit I do vaguely like the feel of something larger than the stud in the piercing.

Kleptomania and Hydrocarbons

So I keep jacking these little vials of organic chemicals from the lab because, well, I can. I can't think of much use for many of them, though. If you need some basic organics, though, I can probably get it to you. Acetone is by far the easiest, though. I wash glassware with it.

[shrug] What does fire do to toluene?
Update: Not much on its own, but when you mix it with some acetone it burns and crackles real nicely. It's prettyful. You should try it sometime.

Icicles and Marshmallows

So it's supposed to cool off sometime soon. With any luck we'll get a fuckton of rain and cool at the same time so once again it'll be decent weather for, you guessed it, raging bonfires.

Raging bonfires lead, of course, to shindigs. We all know you like those shindigs.

Also, it's been way too long since I've experienced Joseph's near-magical cooking.

I fucking hate winter. I can't stand cold. I can't wait for it to come.

Also, Stevo's thing was tonight. It wasn't too bad. Corona Light sucks when you can taste it through the extreme excess of water so Meagan got most of mine. Afterwards Meagan, Sarah, and Julie piled in the car and we hit up the Anchor. Nice conversations... :)[shrug] I enjoyed myself.

Gotta make some sweet tea, though. I think I'm just gonna make some, stick it in the fridge in Meagan/Nikki's room and then tell Sarah that's a good place to find it, since she wanted some. I just have to remember to brew the stuff. It takes a little bit of attention to make magic.

I think it's normal.

Nikki tells me it's weird that I'll drive 30 miles out of my way to pick somebody up or offer rides even when I invite people to my own house. Is that really so strange? I guess it gets expensive, but when I say I'm cheap I'm talking about myself. I don't like to buy me anything. Food, tickets, fuel... I hate spending money on me. I want money so I can easily pick anyone up from anywhere or spot them when they're out of cash and we're bored. If I'm ever filthy rich my friends are gonna be really happy people 'cause they'll do stuff on my tab all the time.

That mood I was talking about yesterday seems to be represented well by simple melodies layered to produce a larger grand effect, I guess. The middle section of Holst's "Mercury" from The Planets Suite or the trumpet part in the below song are good examples.

A Different Kind of Smile

The kind that isn't ecstatic or even necessarily happy. No, this smile is the faint grin of a man who is perfectly at peace with himself and the world. The song at the bottom of the post exemplifies this mood. Click the link and watch the video. Ignore the lyrics, though. The song is about love. That's not what I'm feeling at all. If you want a song that works, lyrics and all, hunt down, uh... Actually, I don't know. It's instrumental, though. I'll let you know when I figure it out. Brian Morgan borrowed a part of it for Beechwood's show this year, though.

Weekend went pretty well. I didn't do anything stupid, but I didn't do any homework, either. [shrug]

I still enjoyed myself. Got to see Stevo, Gabe, and Plate. I don't know. Nikki brings it up sometimes and while I can't think of any specific reason I like having Gabe around and I do bitch a lot, he's still a good friend of mine. I dunno. I'm not gonna try to figure it out, though. I like having him around and that's all that should matter.

Saw two movies people told me I should see. "Knocked Up" and "Accepted" were both excellent. The first was, as Kaitlin said, a bit too romantic comedy but it had a lot of the awkward humor that makes The Office so good.

I think I have a new reader, too. Alicia can comment whenever if she reads it, but she's getting a short blurb so you guys know about her.
Alicia is, for all intents and purposes, my opposite. We were raised differently and share almost none of the same beliefs and values. Aside from this, and probably in spite of it, she's my closest friend at UC. And honestly, if she's willing to put up with me despite all our differences and my sick sense of humor, I can really believe that I'm maybe a good person after all. Maybe.
